The Masonry Work You Never See Still Shapes Every Fire

Most advice about getting more heat from a fireplace focuses on what the homeowner controls: dry wood, a well built fire, an open damper during ignition. All of that matters. What gets skipped is that a large part of how well any fireplace performs was decided years, sometimes decades, before the current owner ever lit a match, by whoever laid the firebrick, parged the smoke chamber, and set the damper.
